Instructions

Grasp the left hand with your right at the level of your heart. During exhalation pull the hands apart as hard as you can, without releasing the lock. During inhalation -- release the tension. Repeat 6 times and switch hands. Place your hands on the sternum. Practice once a day. Visualise Red color during practice.

About the mudra

This hand yoga stretch is great for stimulating the heart muscles and opening of the bronchial tubes. Releasing tension in this area not only enhances the activity of our heart but helps to let go of negative emotions, “coldness” and hostility towards other people. The fourth “heart” chakra helps us feel more open, gives us courage and confidence.

Use this mudra when you need encouragement and strength to overcome obstacles, when communicating with other people. Try to visualize the red color when practicing the ganesha mudra and feel the warmth pouring through your chest area

Herbal remedies

The most important herbal remedies, that may greatly enhance the effect of this mudra are:

Hawthorn
Hawthorn extract increases blood flow to the heart muscle, helping to counteract heart attacks due to lack of blood flow. In pharmacological tests, hawthorn has been shown to improve the contractility of the heart muscle (which can lead to better pumping ability of the heart), increase performance and output, reduce the heart’s workload, steady the heartbeat (antiarrhythmic properties), as well as increasing the heart’s tolerance to oxygen deficiency (as happens during stress or excitement).
In Europe, thousands of doctors prescribe hawthorn to prevent cardiovascular disease or to help alleviate symptoms of mild to moderate heart problems.

Hawthorn Berries

NATURE’S WAY, Health and Beauty,

Cayenne
Taken internally, cayenne reduces clot formation by reducing platelet stickiness. Cayenne also increases the elimination of excess (free) cholesterol via the stool.

The Doctor’s Heart Cure, Beyond the Modern Myths of Diet and Exercise

Al Sears. Dragon Door Publications 2004, Paperback, 320 pages, $13.90

4.5

This is a good book about an alternative approach to heart disease prevention and treatment. Many people swear by the effectiveness of the author’s approach and claim immense benefits were achieved as a result of following Dr. Sears’ advice.
The book’s description says -- “Your heart’s salvation lies in reengineering the diet and exercise habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors to fit our modern culture. What does this entail? To build a strong and resilient heart engage in brief, explosive bouts of intense exercise. Consume a diet rich in high quality fat, pasture-fed meat, free-range dairy, wild-caught fish and liberal helpings of low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. Avoid grain-based starches as best you can. And take appropriate supplements to counteract the nutritional deficiencies of modern produce.”

Courage

Osho. St. Martin’s Griffin 1999, Paperback, 208 pages, $7.44

4.5

Courage is not the absence of fear, says Osho. It is, rather, the total presence of fear, with the courage to face it. This book provides a bird’s-eye view of the whole terrain-where fears originate, how to understand them, and how to find the courage to face them. In the process, Osho proposes that whenever we are faced with uncertainty and change in our lives, it is actually a cause for celebration. Instead of trying to hang on to the familiar and the known, we can learn to enjoy these situations as opportunities for adventure and for deepening our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Courage also features a number of meditation techniques specifically designed by Osho to help people deal with their fears.
